I was also mesmerized by the horizon views of Windy City from the water, which is unwinding and memorable. Plan on spending half a day or more in this awesome hands-on museum. Located inside Navy Pier, there’s plenty to do for kids ages 10 and under. There are even designated play spaces for babies and toddlers, as well as a nursing room and nursing chairs located throughout the museum. It has everything you would expect from a planetarium, including hands-on exhibits detailing space exploration and astronomy, as well as numerous sky shows! If you’re short on time, I suggest saving this stop for another trip. Along with Adler Planetarium and Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum is located on Museum Campus.

Lincoln Park Zoo

If the weather is good, you’ll have an amazing view of the city, but if it’s cloudy, save this trip for another day. I would describe it as a boardwalk/mall with a children’s museum thrown in for good measure. During the summer, tourists and locals alike congregate at Navy Pier for bi-weekly fireworks in the evening and picnics along the lakefront.

Set sail on a Chicago Architecture River cruise.

At Morton Arboretum, you can take a walk through the Children’s Garden and Maze Garden. Have lunch at Ginkgo Restaurant overlooking a beautiful lake and go on a troll hunt. There are two wings, the original building, and the new modern wing. Inside you’ll find art in every medium covering every era of history, as well as art from all over the world. Chicago is a fun place for the whole family, with iconic landmarks like The Bean in Millenium Park and the mind-blowing observation deck at Willis Tower!

Board the Lady Grebe, a 48-foot vintage yacht, for a 90-minute tour with your group of 6 or less, or set sail on a sunset cruise on most nights of the week. Enjoy incredible views from the Chicago River and Lake Michigan while your knowledgeable guides provide lively narration about the city’s rich history. For example, Willis Tower Skydeck offers sky-high city views while the Chicago River cruise delivers exciting city excursions on the water.

Make sure to drop by the Hamill Family Play Zoo when traveling with your toddlers or younger children. The Lincoln Park Zoo is a longtime-running tourist attraction dating back to 1868. At the end of the show, the kids also get to meet the magician and have a generally immersive experience.

Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center

One of the top things to do in Chicago with kids of all ages is explore the many world-class museums located downtown. Experience the world-famous Chicago river dyeing from the best seat in the house! This Chicago tradition aboard the Wendella fleet has a front row view of the river dyeing, then takes a cruise along the Chicago River with festive music. Wendella is the OG in Chicago architectural boat tours, in operation since 1935. Learn about 130 years of architectural innovation and the world-renowned architecture from one of their expert guides.

Chicago has some of the most remarkable modern architecture in America and the Chicago Architecture Center is a great way to explore this aspect of the city. Along the waterfront, you will also find several restaurants and food stalls to enjoy a snack or beverage by the water. Chicago Riverwalk is one of my favorite things to explore in the city.
